科研方向:
探讨朊蛋白病,帕金森氏病和阿尔茨海默氏病等神经退行性疾病发病机制和诊断治疗;研究正常细胞朊蛋白在抗氧化应急,错误折叠蛋白质引起的神经元死亡,缺血再灌注组织损伤,感染及肿瘤发生和转移中的作用。
学术贡献:
在世界上首次发现正常人和动物脑组织含有朊病毒样蛋白以及发现一种新的人朊蛋白病(Variant protease-sensitive prionopathy, VPSPr)。而且发现皮肤错误折叠蛋白播种活性可作为诊断朊蛋白病及帕金森病的生物标志物。
工作经历:
自2022年12月起,担任南昌大学第一附属医院特聘教授,江西省临床医学科学研究院执行院长及神经病学研究所创始所长。
在2022年12月到南昌大学一附院任职前,担任全美朊蛋白病病理监测中心副主任,朊蛋白病和帕金森病皮肤诊断项目主任,美国凯斯西储大学 (Case Western Reserve University) 医学院病理和神经内科系教授及终身教职。
既往有关荣誉称号及 :中国疾控中心朊蛋白病实验室 教授,吉林大学第一医院神经内科唐敖庆客座教授,南昌大学客座教授及赣江学者南昌大学一附院讲座教授。

江西医学院(现南昌大学医学院)医疗系本科,同济医科大学(现华中科大医学院)核内分泌硕士,上海医科大学(现复旦大学医学院)华山医院肾内科博士。美国凯斯西储大学 (Case Western Reserve University) 及加拿大多伦多大学 (University of Toronto) 神经退行性疾病博士后。

兼任《神经科学前沿-神经变性》(Frontiers in Neuroscience – Neurodegeneration)杂志及《衰老神经科学前沿》(Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience)杂志Associate Editor。为《新英格兰医学杂志》,《美国神经内科学年鉴》,《PLOS病原体》,《神经病理学学报》,《美国病理学杂志》,《细胞报告》,和《科学报告》等近50种杂志的特邀评稿人。为美国国立卫生研究院(NIH)和阿尔茨海默协会,英国医学研究理事会 (Medical Research Council),法国医疗保险基金会 (Fondation pour la Recherche Médicale),意大利特勒菘基金会 (Fondazione Telethon)及加拿大艾伯塔朊蛋白病研究所等课题特邀评审人。主编朊蛋白病专著 (Prion and Diseases)(2013年第一版和2023年第二版)。在国际学术期刊发表评论文章和科研论文70余篇,包括《细胞》(Cell), 《科学》子刊《科学转化医学》(Sci Transl Med), 《自然》子刊《自然通讯》(Nat Commun), 《美国医学会神经科学》(JAMA Neurol), 《美国国家科学院院刊》(PNAS), 《神经病学纪事》(Ann Neurol), 和《脑》(Brain)等。先后主持和共同主持美国NIH及不同基金会等课题共1千多万美金科研项目。科研成果曾被美国纽约时报及中国新华社报道。

Research Interests:
Pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases including prion disease, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. Physiological and pathophysiological roles of the normal cellular prion proteins in anti-oxidative stress, the misfolding protein-associated neuronal death, ischemic/reperfusion-induced tissue injury, infection, and tumor development and metastasis.
Work experience:
Dr. Zou is currently a distinguished professor of the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University, the executive director of the Jiangxi Academy of Clinical Medical Sciences and the founding director of the Institute of Neurology of the First Affiliated Hospital.
Before joined the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University, Dr. Zou served as Associate Director of the National Prion Disease Pathology Surveillance Center, Director of the skin projects on prion diseases/Parkinson’s disease, tenured Professor of the Departments of Pathology and Neurology at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, Ohio, USA.
Dr. Zou has been also honored as Adjunct Professor of Prion Disease Laboratory of China Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Visiting Professor Tang Aoqing of Department of Neurology, First Hospital of Jilin University, Visiting Professor of Nanchang University and Ganjiang Scholar, Chair Professor of First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University.
Educations:
He holds a bachelor's degree in medical science from Nanchang University School of Medicine, a master's degree in nuclear endocrinology from Huazhong University of Science and Technology School of Medicine, and a doctorate in nephrology from Huashan Hospital of Fudan University. His postdoctoral training in neurodegenerative diseases was done at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA and the University of Toronto, Canada.
He has also practiced in clinical work in the Department of Internal Medicine of Nanchang Fourth Hospital and the Department of Nephrology of Shanghai Changzheng Hospital.
Other highlights:
Dr. Zou is also the associate editor of the journal Frontiers in Neuroscience – Neurodegeneration and the journal Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience. He is an invited reviewer for nearly 50 journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Neurology, PLOS Pathogens, Journal of Neuropathology, American Journal of Pathology, Cell Reports, and Scientific Reports. He is an invited reviewer for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Alzheimer's Association, the Medical Research Council, the Fondation pour la Recherche Médicale, the Fondazione Telethon in Italy and the Alberta Prion Institute of Prion Disease in Canada. He edited two volumes of prion disease monographs and their second edition published by Springer in January 2023. He has published more than 70 scientific papers and review articles in international academic journals, including Cell, Science Translational Medicine, Nat Commun, JAMA Neurol, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Ann Neurol, and Brain. He has presided over and co-chaired more than 10 million US dollars of scientific research projects from the US NIH and different foundations. The scientific research results have been reported by the New York Times and China's Xinhua News Agency.
